Types of residence permits for foreign citizens

Work Residence Permit

A work residence permit is for a foreign citizen coming to Georgia for entrepreneurial or labor activities. Also, for freelancers or persons with a business in Georgia.This type of permission has two main criteria for applicants:1 – The company’s annual turnover must exceed GEL 50,000 per employed foreigner. In other words a company with two or more foreigner employees must possess turnover doubled or tripled in accordance with the number of employees.2 – The applicant’s monthly income must exceed Georgian minimum wage by at least five times. After that the residency is issued with the right of temporary residence for a maximum of 6 years.

Short-Term Residence Permit

A Short-term Residence Permit is for a person and his/her family members who, based on the rule established by Georgian legislation, possess property (with the exception of agricultural land), with a market value exceeding USD 100,000 or the equivalent sum in GEL.Family members include a spouse, underage dependent, and/or fully dependent incapacitated person.

Investment Residence Permit

The Investment Residence Permit in Georgia is for a foreign citizen who has invested at least USD 300,000 in Georgia or owns real estate valued at USD 300,000 or more (excepting agricultural land) within the territory of Georgia.In such cases, permits are also issued to the investor’s family members, which include a spouse, underage dependent, and/or fully dependent incapacitated person.Holders of this type of residence permit must present turnover documents annually to government bodies showing that the investment is not dormant.The investment residence permit is valid for 5 years. Therefore if all the investor(s) have satisfied all government needs during the 5-year period, this permit will turn into a permanent residence permit after 5 years.

Permanent Residence Permit

A Permanent Residence Permit is for a foreigner holding a temporary residence permit who has resided in Georgia for the preceding six years.It is also issued to individuals who have had the above-mentioned Investment Residence Permit for five years. The investor can apply for this type of residence permit only after this 5-year period. This type of residence permit is issued for an indefinite term.

Educational Residence Permit

An Educational Residence Permit is for the purpose of study at any educational facility authorized in Georgia. This type of residency is valid temporarily for a maximum of 6 years.
